If you want to combine the capabilities of Capture One and Radiant Photo, it’s very easy. That’s because Capture One offers two useful commands.
Two methods to choose from
With Capture One, there are two ways to hand off files.
- Edit With… This method converts the image to a new file within Capture One and applies all of the edits that you had used first.
- Open With… This method passes on the original raw file and ignores any edits or crops that may have been applied in Capture One.
Handing off from Capture One with the Edit With… command
If you’ve applied edits, crops, or lens correction to a raw file, you’ll likely want to use the Edit With.. command to hand it off to Radiant Photo. Apply any Capture One edits you want first to the file, but minimize aggressive adjustments to exposure or color and let Radiant Photo handle that.
- Select the image you want to edit in the browser of Capture One.
- Choose Image -> Edit With from the main menu and select Radiant Photo. If it doesn’t appear in the list, choose Other… and navigate to the Radiant LR plugin.
- From the Format list, choose an exchange format.
- TIFF works well for high-quality edits. A 16-bit file ensures the greatest color fidelity and editing flexibility.
- PNG files are smaller in size but surpass JPEG in image quality.
- Other options like color profile and compression are available but vary by file format.
- Adobe RGB is the best option for Radiant Photo for color.
- ProPhotoRGB* also works well and is a wide gamut color space.
- Adobe RGB is the best option for Radiant Photo for color.
- In general, leave the Resolution and Scale options on their default settings (unless the image is to be resized).
- In the Adjustments tab, you’ll likely want to choose Respect crop to keep any applied crops on the raw file.
- However, you should select No Output Sharpening to avoid double-sharpening the image.
- Make any changes to the Metadata settings as desired.
- When ready, click the Edit Variant button to start the exchange.
Capture One automatically opens Radiant Photo and converts the image file. Once configured, Capture One will remember the settings for further handoffs to Radiant Photo.
- Make any edits in Radiant Photo that you want to apply.
- When done, it’s time to save your work. If using the Radiant LR plugin, choose Save to capture all edits to the same file and save it in the correct default location.
- Switch back to Capture One, and you’ll see that the new image is stored in your library.
Handing off from Capture One with the Open With… command
If you want to hand off your files in their native state, then the Open With… command is your best option. This passes the original raw file into Radiant Photo.
- Select the image you want to edit in the browser of Capture One.
- Choose Image -> Open With from the main menu and select Radiant Photo. If it doesn’t appear in the list, choose Other… and navigate to the Radiant Photo application and select Open. (Note, do not us the Radiant LR plugin as it is not designed to convert raw files).
- Radiant Photo launches and opens the image.
- Make any edits in Radiant Photo that you want to apply.
- When done, click Save. If you handed off multiple files you can choose Save All.
- In the destination dropdown choose Same folder as original.
- For naming, choose _Radiant to make it easy to identify the new file.
- Choose the file format for the exported file. A TIFF file is the highest quality output and supports 16-bit color. If you need to save space, you can choose one of the other options.
- Click the Save button when ready.
- Once the file is saved, you can click the Close Photo button.
- Switch back to Capture One; the new image will not be displayed.
- Right-click on the original file and choose Show in Library.
- Select the folder in your library and right-click again. Choose Synchronize. Capture One evaluates the folder for new images.
- Once detected, you can click the Sync… button to add any new files.
- Make any additional corrections in Capture One as desired. For example, in this photo, Keystone Vertical and Crop adjustments were applied.
